    WHY USE CO2 FERTILISER?

BEAUTIFUL PLANTS, HEALTHY FISH - WITH CO2!

    WHY USE CO2FERTILISER IN AQUARIUMS?

Aquarium water almost always contains too little CO2. Natural CO2 is already extracted by the water companies from tap water through aeration. Aquatic plants eagerly absorb the small amounts of CO2 left in the water. Mostly it's not enough. Stems and leaves turn weak and pale and no growth can be observed. Immunity is weakened and algae settle on the leaves. Unlike in nature, aquariums lack a natural supply of CO2. But who wants have a layer of dead leaves and food remains several centimetres thick in their aquarium?

CO2FERTILISER HAS A LOT OF OTHER ADVANTAGES TOO

    • CO2 partially dissolves in water as carbon dioxide. Therefore CO2 can be used to adjust the pH level (acidity level) of the aquarium water to an optimal, natural level for fish and plants.
    • In particular, aquarium fish like slightly acidic water. It has a positive effect on their very sensitive fish skin.
    • Trace elements important to plants and fish become more readily available.
    • Unsightly limescale deposits on plant leaves ("biogenic descaling") is prevented.

    CO2SHORTAGES HAVE GRAVE CONSEQUENCES

    • Reduced, poor-quality growth
    • Sudden plant death
    • Limescale deposits on leaves
    • Excessive, unnatural pH levels
    • This creates stress for the fish and increases their susceptibility to disease
    • Lack of iron and trace elements
    • Sudden ammonia poisoning
    • Algae blooms

    PROFESSIONAL TIP

Good plant growth = no algae

Aquariums with good aquatic plant growth don't give troublesome algae a chance. Nutrients that promote algae growth, like phosphates and nitrates, are immediately taken up by the plants. But if there's a lack of CO2, plant growth is inhibited. Excess nutrients are not used up quickly enough. That gives the algae the chance they need, because they only require a very small amount of CO2.
Good planting and regular CO2fertilisation are therefore among the most important algae prevention measures.
