Aquariumplant In vitro.
Sagittaria subulata "Needle Leaf" is a very narrow-leaved, relatively small arrowhead. Its exact origin is unknown, but the plants from the Sagittaria subulata complex are native to eastern and south-eastern North America. It has been in cultivation for several decades, but until now has been a little-known rarity. The plant was presented by Peter Schneider ('Aquarium Perle' shop, Zuzgen, Switzerland) under the provisional name Sagittaria "filiformis". In the meantime, we have called it Sagittaria sp. "Needle". It has been available as a tissue culture plant from Tropica since February 2025.
With an abundant supply of macronutrients and CO2, the leaves grow to approx. 30 cm long and 3 mm wide. In aquariums without additional CO2, they can remain much smaller at approx. 10 cm long and 1.5 - 2 mm wide. The colouring is medium to olive green, or light brown-red in bright light. This Sagittaria resembles both Vallisneria gracilis ("V. nana") and Helanthium tenellum and is between these two plants in terms of growth height.
The Needle leaf arrowhead is relatively undemanding and well suited to tanks without CO2 addition, where it remains quite small as described above. However, it is somewhat more light-requiring than "normal" S. subulata and does not tolerate heavy shading by other plants. Nutrient supply via the substrate is very beneficial for its growth.Sagittaria subulata "Needle Leaf" forms underground runners, the growth and reproduction rate is moderate. Over time, the plant forms a dense stand. We cannot specify an exact temperature range, but the North American arrowhead herbs from the Sagittaria subulata group also tolerate quite low temperatures of well below 20 °C.
With its grass-like appearance and moderate height, the Needle leaf arrowhead is very suitable for aquascaping, even in the midground and background of nano aquariums, where Vallisneria gracilis ("nana") often grows too tall. Sagittaria subulata "Needle Leaf" is still little known at the moment, but as an easy-to-grow, fine-leaved plant, it is sure to be widely used in the aquarium hobby.
